Wood carving is not very difficult to learn Because of its fibrous strength, it can be carved more thinly and precisely than stone or animal bone. For large compositions, two or more pieces of wood may be carved then joined. Hardwoods are more difficult to sculpt but possess greater luster and endurance, while softwoods are easier to shape.

Wood carving is one of the oldest arts of humankind. To carve a figure/design in wood may be not only more difficult but also less satisfactory than sculpting with marble, owing to the tendency of wood to crack, to be damaged by insects, or to suffer from changes in the atmosphere.

Wood carving can take on a few different forms depending on the cutting method and tools you are using. You’ll there is still quite a bit of overlap in techniques between the styles so learning one doesn’t necessarily exclude you from mastering the others as well.

Gouges and chisels are designed to be pushed with your palm or tapped with a mallet to make cuts and remove wood.

Hard exotic woods can be extremely tough to carve using any hand tools but especially palm gouges.

Wood carving knives are designed to be used in more of a sweeping or whittling motion.
